City of a thousand facets
Culture, local folklore, traditions, and above all history, Maastricht is a pillar not only of the Netherlands but also of Europe. Indeed, Maastricht is mostly known as the birthplace of the European Union with the Treaty of 1993, but also to be split in two parts by the Meuse River with on the one side industriality, and the other one history. In this article, we’ll deal more specifically with the historical side.
Our recommended bucket list:
- For history buffs, Maastricht is the perfect city, built like a timeline. The medieval city, you can easily discover its unique architecture with the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption. Notwithstanding, if you’re more tempted by modernity and art let’s try the Bonnefanten Museum.
- Food addict? No problem, you’ll be sure to try the Vlaai or the Stroopwafel, old Limburg specialities that once you’ve tasted it for the first time you can’t get enough of.
- In terms of big events, you can’t miss the Maastricht carnival, a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages and has continued to thrive over the years: it usually takes place in February for only few days but is maybe considered as a national event!
